News in the joint project “PORTABLE 5.0” for ports and logistics: Together with COCUS AG as a partner, the seaport of Wismar is building a local 5G mobile private network that will also be used in the future as a research infrastructure for small and medium-sized ports and will drive the digital transformation to advance digitization and process optimization in logistics. The project has reached another milestone towards the intended goal of testing various possible applications of 5G technology for the seaports of Wismar.<\/em><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The “PORTABLE 5.0” project, led by the Seaport Wismar<\/a>, aims to test various 5G applications for German ports and will receive 4.1 million euros in funding until 2024. The benefits of 5G technology are to be exploited as widely as possible for various port use cases. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the joint project “PORTABLE 5.0”, planned use cases include process optimization in real-time dispatching with resident companies, remote control of ship loaders and vehicles for timber transport from the port to timber manufacturers, latency testing for remote control, and remote control of drones for remote maintenance and storage.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When testing different use cases in the 5G mobile private network, the aim is to achieve high multiplier effects with regard to the results so that other German ports can also benefit from them in the future. In particular, the high data transmissions and low latencies made possible by 5G are the basis for the planned testing of the use cases, as this allows data to be transmitted in near real time.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The joint project has now created the basis for testing the planned use cases: Together with the service & solution provider COCUS AG, the seaport of Wismar has successfully completed the construction of the 5G mobile private network on an Open-RAN basis on the port premises. The 5G mobile private network has been accepted by the seaport of Wismar and handed over for implementation of the planned use cases. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The standalone Open-RAN 5G mobile private network is based on the 5G Standalone Packet Core developed by COCUS. The mobile private network is supplied with all the necessary hardware and software components for deployment and operation. COCUS used measurement equipment from Rhode & Schwarz to measure the indoor and outdoor area at the Wismar seaport. For the wireless power supply, COCUS relies on its strong partners Airspan and FibroLAN. For remote control of the machines, COCUS uses the industrial protocol Profinet via 5G.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

COCUS offers an individual end-to-end service around private 5G networks, from strategic planning to implementation and operation. After defining requirements & use cases, customized radio network planning is performed by the COCUS team of experts. Customers also receive support in applying for licences at the Federal Network Agency. According to the requirements, the selection & coordination of the hardware takes place, which forms the basis for the provision of the network infrastructure as well as the commissioning. After successful commissioning, COCUS AG offers operation, maintenance and support or managed service of choice for the project.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Together, the infrastructure for testing the use cases has been created by the Seaport Wismar and COCUS AG. Next, the seaport will turn its attention to the operation of the campus network and the implementation of the use cases, with COCUS AG providing support for integration and migration as well as implementation of the use cases. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
