Open virtualization, affordable and predictable

For many environments, Proxmox VE is a production-ready, open-source alternative. COCUS migrates your virtualization in five phases, with a pilot and a fallback plan.

The starting point

Why is open virtualization worth it?

More control

Open, European technologies create transparency and reduce long-term dependencies.

Up to 80% cost advantage

Open virtualization enables lower platform costs while creating long-term predictability.

Flexible architecture

Virtualization, containers, storage and backup can be shaped to fit your own IT landscape.

Technology

What does Proxmox VE offer?

Proxmox VE combines virtual machines, containers, high availability, software-defined storage and central management in one open platform.

Costs

Up to 80% lower ongoing costs through a transparent support and licensing model.*

Virtualization & Containers

KVM/QEMU for virtual machines and native support for LXC containers.

High Availability

Clustering, live migration and automated failover for high availability.

Storage & Backup

Ceph and ZFS as well as centralized data backup with Proxmox Backup Server.

Open Source

Open technology platform with professional vendor support.

*Example calculation: 3 hosts with 2 CPUs and 16 cores each.

Process

How does the migration to Proxmox VE work?

COCUS analyzes the existing infrastructure, develops the appropriate target architecture and migrates systems in a controlled five phase process.

Analysis

Recording of systems, applications, dependencies, hardware and existing requirements.

Design

Concept for compute, storage, network, backup, security and support.

Pilot

Building a test cluster and migrating selected systems, including restore and failover tests.

Migration in waves

Step by step migration of workloads with defined approval points and backup options.

Operations

Monitoring, updates, documentation and optional Managed Services by COCUS.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Proxmox VE suitable for production use in enterprises?

Yes. Proxmox VE is an open source platform developed by Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH in Vienna. The current version 9.2 is based on Debian 13 and is expected to be maintained until at least 2030. For business critical systems, 24/7 support is available.

Is Proxmox VE a sovereign alternative?

Yes, in several respects. Proxmox VE is fully open source (AGPLv3), with development and support based in Europe. There are no license keys that expire, so your environment continues to run even without a subscription. And because Proxmox is built on open technologies such as KVM, Ceph and ZFS, you are not tied to a single vendor.

How much does Proxmox VE cost?

The software is free and functionally identical across all subscription levels. The paid subscription is priced per CPU socket and year: Basic €370, Standard €550 and Premium €1,100 (net, as of September 2026). The number of CPU cores does not affect the price.

Are there hidden costs with Open Source?

The software itself is free and all features are included. Costs arise from the support subscription per CPU socket, migration and training, and potentially backup storage. These costs are predictable and are fully accounted for during the exit check.

What happens if we cancel the support subscription?

Your servers continue to run without restrictions. The subscription provides vendor support and access to the Enterprise Repository. Without it, updates remain available via the public repository.

What happens to our Windows servers?

Windows VMs run on Proxmox VE. Before migration, VirtIO drivers are installed and network configurations documented to ensure everything works smoothly after the switch.

Our business application is only certified for VMware. What now?

We clarify this with the software vendor in advance. Critical systems are migrated last or temporarily remain on VMware in a hybrid setup.

What about our backup software?

Proxmox Backup Server provides incremental, deduplicated and encrypted backups. Alternatively, we check whether your existing backup solution supports Proxmox.

Can we migrate step by step?

Yes. Many companies start with test, DR or branch environments, or deploy new workloads on Proxmox and migrate existing systems during the next hardware refresh.

What happens if we outgrow the platform?

Proxmox VE scales from single servers to large clusters with Ceph storage. Multiple clusters and sites can be centrally managed with Proxmox Datacenter Manager, including live migration between clusters.

Start with an honest cost comparison

We calculate with your real core and socket numbers and tell you whether the switch is worth it. No obligation.
