Seaport Wismar & COCUS make 5G portable

Düsseldorf and Wismar, 23.02.2021 – with the joint project “PORTABLE 5.0”, 5G technology for ports and logistics is taking off – with COCUS AG as a partner for the local 5G private network! The project supports the digital transformation of small and medium-sized ports and aims to test various possible applications of 5G technology for the seaports of Wismar and Stralsund and the inland port of Karlsruhe on the upper Rhine over the next two years.

The seaport of Wismar lives up to its reputation as a modern logistics company in the Baltic Sea region! The seaport’s strong sense for digitalisation trends is also confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport: the “PORTABLE 5.0” project led by the seaport of Wismar will be funded with 4.1 million euros until 2024 to test various 5G applications for German ports.

To take advantage of the 5G technology, the project participants are setting up multiple 5G based trial fields on their premises. The goal of implementing several diverse use cases is to achieve a high multiplier effect from which also other German ports can benefit in the future. The possibility of high data transmission and the low latencies in 5G private networks are particularly exciting for the project, as they allow data to be transmitted near to real time.

The goals of the joint 5G project include process optimisation in real-time dispatching with the local companies, automated loading of bulk carriers and the development of a 5G private network for autonomous driving on the habours premises in the indoor and outdoor areas. For this purpose, a partner was sought by tender to build the required 5G infrastructure on the approximately 60ha site with the corresponding know-how and the necessary technology. Here, COCUS AG was able to prevail over other applicants and establish itself as the end-to-end provider for the implementation of the 5G mobile private network in Wismar.

The service & solution provider COCUS AG is implementing a customized 5G private network on the port site, making the seaport the operator of its own radio network. The standalone Open-RAN 5G private network is based on COCUS’ own 5G Standalone Packet Core and comes with all the necessary hardware and software components for the planned deployment and operation. For the wireless power supply, COCUS relies on its strong partners Airspan and FibroLAN.

COCUS offers an individual end-to-end service around private 5G networks, from strategic planning to implementation and operation. After the definition of requirements & use cases, the customised radio network planning is carried out by the COCUS team of experts. Customers also receive support in applying for licences at the Federal Network Agency. According to the requirements, the selection & coordination of the hardware takes place, which forms the basis for the provision of the network infrastructure as well as the commissioning. After successful commissioning, COCUS AG offers operation, maintenance and support or managed service of choice for the project.

Both the seaport of Wismar and COCUS AG will report on progress in the PORTABLE 5.0 project and are looking forward to the next steps together!
