LoRaWAN network: Digitization at the Seaport of Wismar with COCUS

The seaport of Wismar is one of the most modern logistics companies in the Baltic Sea region and demonstrates an unerring sense of national and global trends in corporate digitization. Among the latest innovative developments at the seaport is the introduction of LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) radio technology. With the help of COCUS AG as a digitization partner, the wireless transmission technology will soon be used to record environmental data and for the maintenance and servicing of plants (condition monitoring).

IHATEC promotes innovative steps towards the future
The planning and implementation of the LoRaWAN is supported by the Innovative Port Technology (IHATEC) funding program. This funding program is primarily dedicated to the development of innovative technologies to help German ports better manage their handling volumes and improve logistics chains.

This goal is congruent with the digitalization goals of the Seaport of Wismar, which drive agility and innovation, efficiency and sustainability. With LoRaWAN radio technology, it is possible to send data easily and energy-efficiently. With the high range and building penetration, data reception from several hundred sensors is possible even in the most remote parts of the building. Particularly advantageous with this technology is the low energy requirement and thus the low cost of operation.

"The use of LoRaWAN offers us great potential to optimize existing processes and reduce costs, while new technologies drive our digitalization. We are looking forward to the joint implementation together with COCUS".

– Florian Lemke, Project Manager Seaport Wismar.

In the future, the use of special sensors will make it possible to reliably and quickly record environmental data, such as temperature and weather, as well as the condition of machines and systems over a long range. Battery-powered sensors can also be used where data exchange was previously impossible due to a lack of power supply. This means that process adjustments can be made quickly and accurately in response to weather-related challenges. Also, the operation and maintenance of plants can be more precisely controlled and monitored through the transmission of data. Through the ongoing optimization of processes, as well as the high energy efficiency, the seaport of Wismar has such great opportunities to save costs, while they use the new technologies to further expand the digitization of the company.

Located in the Bay of Mecklenburg, the seaport of Wismar is ideally situated to combine the flow of goods for German imports and exports with port-specific services and innovation. The company focuses on tradition, innovation and digital development. As a modern logistics company, the seaport offers a wide range of port-specific services such as project cargo, general and bulk cargo, warehousing and more. We are pleased that as a digitization partner we can help to drive digitization at the seaport of Wismar even further.
