After an exciting visit last year, COCUS was once again present at PortComms25 in London, on October 8th-9 th. We attended with the goal of exchanging new insights with other innovators and operators in the port industry.
With our experience from the successful integration of a 5G infrastructure in three German ports, we were looking forward to discussing new perspectives and future opportunities for port logistics. In this review, we highlight which topics were particularly relevant and why they are especially important for the future of port communication.
Key takeaways from PortComms25
PortComms25 focused on the crucial role of wireless communications and private 5G networks in modernising port operations worldwide. Experts from some of the largest and most innovative ports in Europe and beyond shared their real-world experiences and challenges in building reliable, continuous connectivity across complex infrastructures. The main themes shaping this year’s discussions included:
- Private 5G in action: Several ports shared their lessons learned from rolling out private 5G networks, including the benefits of low-latency communication and improved network resilience.
- Operational efficiency through connectivity: Continuous wireless coverage was shown to be key to automation, real-time tracking and improved safety.
- Scaling for the future: A recurring topic was how to scale network solutions to meet growing demands, from IoT devices to autonomous port vehicles.
Smart port use cases and COCUS private 5G solutions
As a provider of private 5G, IoT and AI-driven solutions, we know the importance of continuous communication networks for smarter, more efficient ports. Our current use cases in Trier, Wismar and Berlin show our expertise in successfully integrating these networks:
With our private 5G solutions essential parts of port infrastructure can be optimized efficiently and in real-time. At Hafen Trier, COCUS private 5G network was introduced to digitalize central transshipment processes. At Seehafen Wismar we set up a 5G solution as the basis for security, monitoring and automation. In addition, a digital test field with COCUS private 5G solutions for real-time tracking, automated truck handling and smart route control is running at Havelport Berlin.
Events like PortComms are a valuable chance to validate these approaches, learn from the best practices of others and discuss what’s next for wireless innovation in port logistics. For COCUS, it was a great opportunity to engage with industry leaders, to face the latest technical and commercial challenges in port connectivity and exchange experiences from our own successful 5G port projects in Germany.
Looking ahead into the future of port logistics
PortComms25 once again highlighted the exciting future of digitalised ports and the crucial role of wireless networks in shaping that future. With our
